30th Celebration, a month on: the set gave back 42%, the RGB Mew found a price, and PSA has graded 125 copies
The same 158 cards that cost $1,267.51 for one of each on 25 September cost $731.96 on the latest reads, with the middle tiers down most. The three RGB Mew, unpriced then, now read $3,739 to $6,000 on 8 to 16 listings each. A pack's contents are worth 49% of its $13.37 price, down from 60%.
On 25 September, nine days after release, this site read every card of the 30th Celebration for the first time and set the pull rates beside the prices. A pack's contents were then worth 60% of its price. This note is the follow-up that one promised: the same cards a few weeks on, the three cards that had no price then, and the first sign of the set in PSA's population.
The set gave back 42%
TCGplayer market, near mint, via PokemonPriceTracker. The first read is 25 September; the latest is each card's newest read, 8 October for most of the set (its last whole-set sweep) and 13 October where stated. The same 158 cards on both dates.
- One of every card: $1,267.51 to $731.96, −42%.
- Special Illustration Rare (10): $799.85 to $475.97, −40%.
- Illustration Rare (18): $174.90 to $92.86, −47%.
- Futuristic Rare (2): $174.22 to $104.08, −40%.
- Pikachu Rare (30): $65.37 to $26.77, −59%.
- Double Rare (12): $29.89 to $12.87, −57%.
- Common (the 68 priced on 25 September): $17.72 to $15.22, −14%.
- Rare (18): $5.56 to $4.19, −25%.
Every one of the ten Special Illustration Rares fell, by 29% to 52%: Mew ex 152 $152.60 to $88.32; Gengar ex 154 $126.21 to $71.14; Pikachu ex 150 $103.44 to $65.53; Jirachi ex 155 $98.18 to $47.28; Mewtwo ex 151 $85.50 to $55.29; Pikachu ex 149 $80.86 to $50.26; Sylveon ex 153 $64.72 to $45.69; Greninja ex 148 $36.93 to $21.96; Salamence ex 156 $27.72 to $15.65; Fuecoco ex 147 $23.69 to $14.85. The two Futuristic Rares: Mew ex 158 $102.16 to $56.02 (13 October), Mewtwo ex 157 $72.06 to $48.06. The loose booster pack went from $18.00 on 25 September to $13.37 on 4 October.
The steepest falls were in the middle tiers, the Pikachu Rares, Double Rares and Illustration Rares, which a pack hands out most often after the commons: TCGplayer's 3,000-pack study puts a Double Rare and an Illustration Rare each in 1 of 5 packs. The commons and plain rares fell least. Sports Illustrated's collectibles desk and Kotaku both tied the set's falling prices to its pull rates in September, and TCGCharts' weekly market pulse of 25 September was titled "the trophies soared, the 30th sank". This site's reads show the size and the shape of the fall; they do not show its cause.
The RGB Mew found a price
Three cards numbered R, G and B were unpriced on 25 September on both providers, and TCGplayer's study opened none in 3,000 packs. They now have TCGplayer market prices, read 13 October:
- R Mew: $6,000.27, on 9 listings, the cheapest at $4,785.99. The figure has not moved since 4 October.
- G Mew: $3,738.75, on 16 listings, the cheapest at $3,549.01.
- B Mew: $3,746.75, on 8 listings, the cheapest at $4,001.49. On 8 October the same figure read $1,702.50.
A market price on a card this scarce rests on a handful of sales, and B's doubled between two reads five days apart. Read the three as where the first sales landed, not as a settled level. They had no first read, so they are left out of the 42% above.
The Classic Collection held up better
The 28 observed reprints went from $1,089.53 on 25 September to $747.26, −31%. Lugia 149 $278.90 to $177.92 (13 October); Charizard 4 $184.66 to $138.96 (13 October), now under the $165.42 the 25th anniversary's Charizard reprint read on 15 September, so the September note's "the 30th's reprint trades above the 25th's" no longer holds on these reads; Magikarp 203 $107.20 to $85.97; Gengar 94 $77.93 to $51.45. Metagross 11 and Genesect-EX 11 still have no observed read and are not counted.
What a pack holds now
The box EV screen's arithmetic on the same pull rates and the latest reads: $4.04 per pack from the set's own tiers and $2.53 from the Classic Collection tier, $6.57 together, against the $13.37 pack: 49%, down from 60% on 25 September. Contents and pack both fell; the contents fell further.
PSA has graded 125 copies
BetterPop's population build of 8 October, 22 days after release, holds 125 graded copies of the 30th Celebration and its Classic Collection together, across 23 card lines. The most graded: Mew ex Futuristic Rare 158, 14 copies, all PSA 10; the Classic Collection Lugia, 13 (11 PSA 10); Mewtwo ex 151 and Gengar ex 154, 9 each; R Mew, 9 (one PSA 10, eight PSA 9); Mew ex 152, 7, all PSA 10. For comparison, Pitch Black's most valuable card, Mega Darkrai ex 116, released 17 July, had 576 graded copies and 366 PSA 10s in the same build.
Those counts measure PSA's turnaround, not the set's supply, so this site has not loaded them into the population screens. The 30th's chase cards keep their badged placeholder populations until a read means something; the next monthly read will say whether November's does.
What comes next
Pokémon's October release list adds 30th Celebration Mini Tins (ten designs, two packs each) and the six-pack Booster Bundle on 2 October, and the 30th Celebration Battle Decks, Espeon ex and Umbreon ex, on 30 October. The catalog's next whole-set sweep of the set will put a later date on every figure above; each card's page shows its own history from the first read.
