Six vintage holos still trading below what their scarcity implies
Not every WotC-era card got repriced in the boom. These six have real scarcity, real nostalgia, and prices that have not caught up to either.
The 2020–2021 repricing of vintage Pokémon was not uniform. Charizard went up, Base Set went up, and a lot of genuinely scarce cards from adjacent sets simply did not get the memo. Here are six worth a second look. None of these is a recommendation to buy — treat them as a research list. ## 1. Blaine's Charizard — Gym Challenge 2/132 A holo Charizard from a set with a substantially smaller surviving population than Base Set, at a fraction of the price. The only thing it lacks is name recognition, and name recognition is the one thing that tends to arrive late. ## 2. Shining Mewtwo — Neo Destiny 108/105 Identical pull rate to Shining Charizard, from the same subset in the same set, and consistently trades far below it. The Charizard premium is real, but this wide is unusual. ## 3. Fossil Dragonite 4/62 The first English Dragonite, from the smallest of the three original expansions. Dragonite has more sustained character demand than its price history reflects. ## 4. Neo Genesis Typhlosion 17/111 Overshadowed entirely by the Lugia in the same set. Johto starters have a devoted collector base, and this is the hardest of the three to find well-centred. ## 5. Team Rocket Dark Blastoise 3/82 Dark Charizard absorbs all the attention in this set. Dark Blastoise has the same cracked-ice foil, the same fragile surface, and a fraction of the demand. ## 6. Mew ★ — EX Dragon Frontiers 101/101 Gold Star Mew sits permanently in the shadow of Gold Star Charizard from the same set. It is arguably the harder of the two to find centred. ## How to think about a list like this "Underpriced relative to scarcity" is not a prediction. Scarcity only converts to price when demand shows up, and demand for a card nobody talks about can stay absent indefinitely. What a list like this is genuinely good for: if you already want one of these cards, you are buying at a point where you are not paying a hype premium. That is a much more defensible reason than expecting the market to re-rate on your schedule.
